Kassos: Themes of the Lyra: Three Generations of Folk Musicians

For the first time, 26 out of 63 (!) different themes that exist in the island of Kassos, have been recorded and made available on a double record and a full size CD.

For the first time the listener can enjoy the music of Kassos: a rare composition of many different music influences from Crete, Cyclades, and Karpathos. Elements from the Greek music of Ionia and of course the Byzantine music are also present, providing a unique musical experience!

It is also the first time that 3 generations of folk musicians, most of them from the Perselis family, have been recorded. You will year first Savas Perselis, the patriarch of the Kassian folk music tradition (born in 1912). He is consider to be one of the last authentic Lyra player and folk poet of the Aegean. Then his brother Ilias (the ``quiet lyra player'') and Nikolas (also known as ``papas'', a famous violin player). His son Dimitris (also lyra player and a singer with a high tone steady voice). Grandchildren and cousins are not behind: Savas junior (in lyra and singing), Giorgos (singing and laouto), Nektarios (lira and singing), Kostas (singing and laouto).

We are certain that you will enjoy this CD, both for its music content, and for its included booklet that will inform about the lyrics and the story behind each theme. You can get a taste of the Pathos theme of Kassos available in Real Audio format. Savas Perselis plays lyra and sings:

I will record my lyra and my voice
to leave behind a small memory ...
